The Two Fatalities Named in the Providence Campus Incident as Law Enforcement Persist in Search for Perpetrator.
Two students who were killed in the recent violent attack on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their shooter persisted following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the only individual of interest in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as vice-president of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, the group said. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also shared words of sorrow publicly, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, family members said.
Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.
What Happened
An additional nine individuals were injured in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a search at a lodging about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was being released.
“We have a murderer out there,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”
Community Anxiety
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our community”.
The shooter discharged a weapon inside a room in the building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a authority reported to the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that entered the lodging seized a pair of pistols and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was detained, the news agency reported.
Those Hurt
Among those wounded, one student was released from the hospital, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.
An educational institution, a private academy in the city of Durham, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.
Additional Memorials
Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the group. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and other students,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, loved ones, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”
National Context
The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about thousands of bachelor's and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in this year, according to statistics. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
