The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is enduring dryness. This significant achievement comes on the heels of grueling years marked by below-average rain that intensified fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.
A Chart Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program showed that all of California is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This shift came after weeks of significant storms that topped up major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.
After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons
Achieving this status involved powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, leading to significant overflow, power outages, and fatalities. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Until late December, areas like northeastern California were still classified as experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the beginning of January eliminated those last vestiges of dryness.
The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average
But, authorities caution that being out of drought is not the same as having no water worries. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.
This mountain snow, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for future water availability. State experts have emphasized that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” said a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
While the drought map shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this precious water balance during the rest of the year.
