The former England manager Discloses Focus on Mentoring Young People Rather than Football Management
Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a re-entry into football management, noting that it would be tough to duplicate the special mission he experienced as head of the Three Lions.
Southgate expressed his plan to channel his attention toward engaging the next generation and combating what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook currently prevalent in the country.
Exploring New Avenues Beyond The Sport
Speaking on air, Southgate was prompted regarding talk linking him with open coaching positions in the English football and abroad.
“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he replied. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”
A Passion for Mentorship
Leading up to the launch of his upcoming book, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, the author emphasized that he is highly enthusiastic about providing role models for young people, applying insights from his time as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.
Southgate feels that his experience managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds broader applications.
“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”
Raising Children and Influencing Youth
Reflecting on his role as a parent, Southgate remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”
He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”
Togetherness Beyond Conflict
He asserted that “the British people share more commonalities than differences” but that the public discourse often centers on division.
“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”
Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is scheduled to present further insights on management and country pride inspired by his remarkable career.
