The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Excelling in Mixed Martial Arts and at Man Utd.

Ibragim Ibragimov grins as he thinks about how his family's life has changed since moving to England from Dagestan a decade ago.

"I adore it here," the Professional Fighters League competitor states.

"My father and I frequently comment, 'this was the country I should have been born in.'"

The young man departed his home in the North Caucasus of Russia because his father believed a move covering more than 3,000 miles promised better career opportunities for him and his brothers.

The initial plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to complete their education before joining one of the nation's colleges.

But, life has turned out slightly different for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a professional MMA fighter and is regarded as one of the prime prospects in the PFL, a major MMA league.

His brothers have taken a different path in athletics and have all been signed by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a spot in the senior squad.

"The primary goal for us is to extract everything from our chosen fields," explains Ibragim.

"I hope them to play for every one of the finest teams in the world. Now it is Man United, in the future it could be a different team."

Starting as Wrestlers to Football Talents

Located in southern Russia, Dagestan holds a mystical reputation among fight fans for generating a host of UFC titleholders in the past few years.

The area has a rich history in wrestling, excelling in the combat sambo discipline and producing numerous Olympic and world champions.

This achievement is not a coincidence, however, as children from the region are frequently encouraged to begin combat sports, specifically wrestling, practically as soon as they can stand.

"When I was young, my dad was constantly instructing me and my little brothers that we had to be powerful, firstly to protect yourself, your family, and your friends," says Ibragim.

"So we all got used to fighting, and that's why people knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a highly skilled wrestler. You can see the move from wrestling to football; obviously, it assisted my younger brothers a lot."

"Many of the footballers he comes up against don't have the identical base he possesses. That's why he's stocky, strong and incredibly driven – due to wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was being tested at Sheffield United. Unaware of his actual age, coaches placed him with boys significantly older.

He was unfazed by the mistake and was more than capable competing against older players because of his background in wrestling.

"They thought Amir and I were the identical age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, along with Ibragim's little brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The clan's stay in South Yorkshire was brief, however, as only weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's talent and he moved across the Pennines consequently.

"They played Manchester United in a tournament and Amir scored a spectacular free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their scouts saw him play and selected him immediately."

Six years after signing for the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the youngest players in the club's history to practice with the first team when he did so in April 2023.

"Do you know what he said to me? 'This is where I should be'," Ibragim says.

"Can he be a first-team player for Manchester United? Absolutely. They should allow all the young players get game time now."

"In my opinion they would play worse than the existing starters. I think the youngsters are hungrier than the present first-team players."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the younger once on the books of Manchester City, have also made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is talented," continues Ibragim.

"He picked up everything quicker than everyone else. He's a good defender. He's going to be similar to a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Dream' to Compete at Old Trafford

Ibragim has now relocated to Manchester and dedicates most of his days perfecting his MMA skills at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he spent three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev get ready for a late-year UFC championship bout.

"I would never have imagined I would be learning under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the greatest fighter in the world – and we always used to look up to him when we were growing up."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Fresh from training with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim states he is eager to win a world title of his own one day.

However that does not prevent him from occasionally fantasizing of representing United and stepping out on the historic turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I owned a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez," he says.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a fantasy realized."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a ambition for me. I was discussing with the PFL guys about it to see if they could do it. It would be huge."
