Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Firefight at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.
The gang of attackers breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Local residents informed journalists that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.
