The vehicles for the 2026 season are set to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious relative to present-day cars.

The world of Formula 1 has revealed the new language that will be used to reference the intricate details of its new 2026 rulebook.

The championship is embarking on what is potentially the largest rules overhaul in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher energy storage, requiring significant developments in the aero packages.

Throughout races, competitors will carefully oversee battery power – sometimes even qualifying laps – to secure the optimal performance.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a diverse audience, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to understand which terminology would aid comprehension of the key features of the new regulations.

The stated goal was to make a series of complex new areas of the competition as easy to grasp as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the moveable wings – have been abandoned in favour of intuitive labels that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the technology.

Exploring the New Tech

Regulators explain that drivers will have greater control to make decisions regarding energy deployment, regeneration, and efficiency.

The new regulations mandate a set of functions that will be visually displayed on television graphics to enhance the audience's understanding of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a car is within one second the vehicle in front to execute an overtaking maneuver.
  • Boost Mode: This is a driver-operated power boost from the hybrid system that can be utilized during attack or defence. It grants the driver maximum power at the activation of a control.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the overall battery capacity is capped.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the nose and rear wings change configuration – spreading on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and top speed, and sealing in the corners for optimal cornering performance.
  • Battery Recharge: Cars can harvest energy with regenerative braking, or during partial power application at the end of straights or in corners where only limited engine output is required.

2026 Car Specifications

The 2026 cars will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight reduced by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although teams will inevitably claw this back as they refine their designs.

Drag has been reduced by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – both wings will move on the straights to improve speed and enhance velocity and return into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will retain 18-inch rims, but the rubber compounds will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

2026 Engine Regulations

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the ICE and the battery and motor, up from about 20% electrical under present rules.

The hybrid system is simplified through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the intricate and expensive unit that generated electricity from the turbocharger.
